This new book recalls “the final crossing” of Steven Foster, a one-time English professor, author, and grandfather to a growing movement that has brought wilderness rites of passage back into the modern world.  The story is told by Scott Eberle, the hospice physician who helped ferry Steven across.  Interspersed with the intimate story of Scott and Steven’s developing relationship is an historical account of how modern folk, once again, are relearning the lost art of dying.  Borrowing from the book's subtitle, we are “learning how to die in order to live."
